How to Become a Christian
The most important decision you will ever make is whether to accept Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior. The process of becoming a Christian is indeed simple, but it is not to be taken lightly. It is a life-changing decision. You will never be the same. You will still face difficulties and problems, but your attitude toward them will be different, and you will not be alone. Jesus Christ will be the best friend you have. He has promised that He will never leave you. He died – taking all your sins upon Himself – so that you can live with Him forever (1 John 2:25).
If you have never accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, we plead with you to consider eternity. Anyone who does not believe in Jesus Christ is destined to spend eternity – that’s forever – in a place called hell. It’s a terrible place of pain, suffering, torture, and total separation from God. There will be no way out, and it’s such a sad thing to think of, because God has made such a wonderful way out.
Jesus was born of a virgin – that’s important, because He was sinless – and He lived a perfect life. He was 100% God, and He was 100% man. Completely. He is the Son of God. He never committed a sin. That’s important, because He became the sacrifice for the sins of the entire world – the whole human race – if they will only accept Him (1 John 2:2). We believe this through faith, and it is through our faith in Jesus Christ that we are saved (Ephesians 2:9). The grace – unmerited favor – of God has made salvation possible for all who believe in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:5).
- ADMIT you are a sinner. Romans 3:23 and 1 John 1:8 remind us of this. We are born sinners, and there is no one who is able to live without sinning. Even the smallest lie is a sin in God’s eyes.
- BELIEVE that Jesus Christ was God “in the flesh”, that He died for your sins, and that God raised Him from the dead. Romans 6:23 explains why God did this. Romans 10:9-10 tells us that we must believe – in our heart – that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that God raised Him from the dead in order to be saved. There is NO other way to Heaven than through Jesus Christ.
- CONFESS to God that you are a sinner. COMMIT your life to Him. Invite Him into your heart, and repent of your sin (1 John 1:9). To “repent” means to turn AWAY from you sinful life and turn TO Jesus Christ. Allow God to CHANGE your life through the Holy Spirit, who will come into your heart the moment you accept Christ as your Savior.
If you are ready to invite Christ into your heart and life, you should pray to Him. There is no “formula” of “magic words” that you should say; the real issue is whether or not you truly believe in Jesus Christ as your Savior. It is very important that you do pray, and you should ask Christ to come into your heart, forgive you of your sins, and save you for eternity. Commit your life to Him. He will save you. Your sins will be forgiven. Romans 10:13 promises that WHOSOEVER calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
If you have accepted Christ as your Savior, let us encourage you to publicly announce that. Find a local church – one that teaches that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and is the only way to Heaven – and publicly profess your newfound faith in Christ. The pastor will be very willing to help you in this process. Follow the example of Jesus Christ in baptism by immersion, then begin regular study of the Bible and prayer. Stay involved with that local church. They will help you grow as a Christian.
Congratulations! You have made the greatest decision you will ever make. God bless you!
If you have read this but you choose to turn away from Christ, it is our prayer that God will continue to draw you to faith through the working of the Holy Spirit in your life. God is not out to get you – HE LOVES YOU!!!! John 3:16 makes this so incredibly clear.
We at Crossroads Baptist Church would love to hear of your decision. Please use the Contact Form on the website to contact us and let us know.
